Blank headwear: buyer's guide

You're buying caps in bulk to put a logo on. That could be a stitched front panel for a team, a heat-pressed patch for an event, a sublimated trucker for a brewery, or a printed dad hat for a retail line. Before you pick a style, it helps to know which caps take which method.

What decides how a cap takes decoration?

The fabric on the front panel decides it, because that's where your logo goes. Cotton twill and polyester behave very differently under ink and heat. Mesh changes what will stick. Embroidery and DTF work on every cap here.

The caps in this guide fall into three groups by construction:

Can I embroider any of these?

Yes. Every cap on this list takes embroidery well, so if you're stitching, choose on look, not fiber.

What about patches, vinyl, and transfers?

Patches work on caps whether you sew them or heat-apply them. Vinyl is pickier, and mesh is the reason.

For heat-applied vinyl, the all-polyester caps are the strongest fit. The Valucap Foam Mesh-Back, the Imperial Original Performance, and the Imperial Wrightson are all 100% polyester, so heat-applied vinyl grips them well. Open mesh gives vinyl less surface to grab. So on the Retro Trucker, the Old Favorite, the Adams dad hat, and the Infinity Her trucker, vinyl has less to hold onto, and another method is a better fit.

DTF transfers work on every cap here. That makes it the safest transfer when one design has to run across mixed styles.

Cotton or polyester for printing?

Pick cotton if you print with ink, and polyester if you print with dye.

Cotton caps for screen print, discharge, and DTG

Four caps are all cotton: the Valucap Bio-Washed, the Adams Optimum, the 47 Brand Clean Up, and the Infinity Her trucker. Cotton takes ink cleanly, so screen print and discharge both go down well. DTG works on them too. None of the four has any polyester in it, so a light ink on a dark cap is unlikely to pick up dye from the fabric.

Polyester caps for sublimation

The two YP Classics truckers, the Flexfit 110®, the Valucap foam trucker, and both Imperial caps are mostly or all polyester, so sublimation comes out vibrant. Skip DTG and discharge on these, since both need cotton fiber to work.

On dark colors, the polyester in these caps can bleed dye into a light ink. If you screen print light ink on a dark poly cap, a low-cure ink or a blocker underbase is the standard shop fix.

The two blends

The LEGACY Old Favorite is cotton-dominant, so DTG works on it, with a little less fine detail than pure cotton. Its 35% polyester means pale inks printed on its darker colors can take on some of the fabric's dye.

The Flexfit Cotton Blend has an uncommon fiber mix, so run a sample before a bulk order of screen print, DTG, or sublimation. It's a better fit for stitching, HTV, or DTF.

• Women's line: Infinity Her Women's Modern Trucker Cap. It's all cotton, so screen print and discharge both go down cleanly.
• One transfer design across mixed caps: DTF, which works on every style above.

Which cotton cap is our pick for printing?

The 47 Brand Clean Up Cap is our pick. It's 100% cotton twill, a clean surface for screen print and discharge alike. There's no polyester in it either, so light inks stay true on dark colors.

Need the women's cut? The Infinity Her trucker is all cotton too, with no polyester to bleed into light inks.
