Bella+Canvas 3001 alternatives: blank tees that do the same job

If the Bella+Canvas 3001 is your house tee, your size charts, press settings and client samples are probably built around it. A second tee has to land close to that, so here is the bar. The 3001 is 4.2 oz, 100% combed ringspun cotton, a unisex retail fit, and pre-shrunk. Because it's all cotton, screen print, DTG, DTF and discharge go down cleanly. Embroidery and vinyl work on it too. Every style below is compared to that baseline.
The closest matches come first. After that come a few picks with a different fit, fiber or weight.
- BELLA + CANVAS Jersey Tee (3001): 4.2 oz, 100% combed ringspun cotton, unisex retail fit, pre-shrunk. This is the reference point.
- Next Level Unisex Cotton T-Shirt (3600): 4.3 oz, 100% combed ringspun cotton. Best for DTG, DTF and discharge on a lightweight all-cotton blank.
- LAT Unisex Fine Jersey Tee (6901): 4.5 oz, 100% combed ringspun cotton jersey. Best for all-cotton print work with a little more weight.
- Tultex Unisex Fine Jersey T-Shirt (202): 4.5 oz, 100% ringspun cotton, pre-shrunk. Best when sizes have to hold.
- Gildan Unisex Softstyle T-Shirt (64000): 4.5 oz, 100% ringspun cotton, modern classic fit. Best for repeat screen print and DTF runs where color has to match.
- Next Level Unisex CVC T-Shirt (6210): 4.3 oz, 60% cotton / 40% polyester. Best for screen print, DTF and vinyl on a cotton/poly blend.
- Comfort Colors Unisex Garment-Dyed Heavyweight T-Shirt (1717): 6.1 oz, 100% ringspun cotton, relaxed fit, garment-dyed. Best for embroidery on a heavier, relaxed tee.
- Gildan Unisex Heavy Cotton T-Shirt (5000): 5.3 oz, 100% cotton, classic fit. Best for screen print and DTF on a classic cut.
- Shaka Wear Unisex Max Heavyweight Tee: 7.5 oz, 100% cotton, oversized fit. Best for embroidery and screen print on the heaviest tee here.
Which tees match the 3001 most closely?
Four tees sit closest to the 3001: the Next Level 3600, the LAT 6901, the Tultex 202 and the Gildan 64000. All four are 100% ringspun cotton between 4.3 and 4.5 oz. They differ in fit and in whether they're pre-shrunk.
Next Level Unisex Cotton T-Shirt (3600)
The 3600 is the nearest match. It's a tenth of an ounce heavier than the 3001 and uses the same combed ringspun cotton. That means it decorates like the 3001: screen print, DTG, DTF and discharge all suit it, and it takes embroidery and vinyl as well. Print shops describe it as a modern, slim fit with a slightly tapered body. If you press transfers, decorator guides pass along Next Level's 310°F maximum heat-press temperature.
Print shops caution that white and lighter shades can be somewhat see-through. So plan your color mix with the fabric weight in mind.
LAT Unisex Fine Jersey Tee (6901)
The 6901 uses the same combed ringspun cotton as the 3001, so it handles every decoration method the same way. Screen print, DTG, DTF and discharge all print on it as they would on the 3001, and it handles embroidery and vinyl. It comes in at 4.5 oz, so it's a slightly heavier tee than the one your samples were built on.
Tultex Unisex Fine Jersey T-Shirt (202)
When a client's sizes are already locked, the 202 is the easy swap. It's pre-shrunk like the 3001. It's 100% ringspun cotton at 4.5 oz, so screen print, DTG, DTF and discharge print as well on it as on the 3001. It takes embroidery and heat-transfer vinyl, too.
Gildan Unisex Softstyle T-Shirt (64000)
The 64000 changes the fit more than the fabric. It's a modern classic cut rather than a retail cut, so expect a different shape on the body. The rest holds close: 100% cotton at 4.5 oz, so it prints and stitches the same way the 3001 does. Because the cut changes, pull one sample in your client's usual size before you commit a run. For more core tees like it, see the core value t-shirts buyer's guide.
Should you switch to a CVC blend?
A CVC blend works when you want some polyester in the shirt, but the polyester changes how it takes decoration. The Next Level 6210 is 60% cotton and 40% polyester at 4.3 oz. Discharge is out, since it needs an all-cotton shirt. Screen print, DTG and DTF still work, just with a little less crispness than you'd get on 100% cotton.
Here is what decorators say about pressing it:
- DTG: One print shop cautions that colors print slightly muted, because the polyester keeps ink from absorbing fully.
- DTF: Decorator guides suggest lowering the press to 300–310°F for the poly content.
As a general rule, poly blends can bleed into light plastisol inks on dark colors. A low-bleed underbase helps. Decorator guides describe the 6210 as sharing the 3600's fitted silhouette, so you can pair the two in one order.
What if you want a heavier tee?
Three styles go heavier, and each one changes the fit along with the weight:
- Gildan 5000: 5.3 oz, classic fit
- Comfort Colors 1717: 6.1 oz, relaxed fit
- Shaka Wear Max Heavyweight: 7.5 oz, oversized fit
The Gildan 5000 sits in the middle. It's 100% cotton, so screen print, DTF and discharge all take well on it. DTG works on it too.
The Comfort Colors 1717 is the biggest change in fit. Decorators report it runs about 1–2 inches wider in the chest and slightly longer in the body than a fitted 3001. A print shop that reports printing 15,000+ of these advises positioning chest logos about 0.5 inch lower because of the dropped shoulder. The same shop says to expect occasional slight color variation between shirts from the garment dye. At 6.1 oz, it gives embroidery a steadier base than the 3001 does.
The Shaka Wear Max Heavyweight Tee is the heaviest, in an oversized cut. At 7.5 oz the fabric holds stitches well, so it's a strong fit for embroidery. DTG and DTF work on it too. That weight also helps it keep its shape instead of stretching out. For a side-by-side of heavier premium options, see the premium blank t-shirts buyer's guide.
Will the swap shrink?
The 3001 and the Tultex 202 are pre-shrunk. The Comfort Colors 1717 is garment-dyed, so it's the style here most likely to shrink. A print shop that reports printing 15,000+ of them puts it at about 2–3%, even with a hot wash and high-heat dry.
Before you lock sizes on any new style, wash and dry one sample and measure it. When sizes must hold, use the Tultex 202.
Which one fits which job?
For a straight backup to the 3001, our pick is the Next Level 3600. It's within a tenth of an ounce and is made from combed ringspun cotton like the 3001, so it takes every decoration method the same way. That makes it the smallest change to your settings and your samples.
For other jobs:
- DTG or discharge retail line: Next Level 3600
- Run where sizes have to hold: Tultex 202
- Cotton/poly blend for vinyl or DTF: Next Level 6210
- Embroidered tee with a relaxed fit: Comfort Colors 1717
- Classic-cut screen print run: Gildan 5000
- Heavy oversized tee for embroidery: Shaka Wear Max Heavyweight
If the same client wants sleeves for cooler events, the long-sleeve tees buyer's guide covers those styles.
