If you're buying totes and bags to decorate, you're choosing two things: how heavy the cotton should be, and whether the job needs a cotton surface at all. Weight changes how the bag handles and how cleanly transfers lay down. Fiber decides which print methods work. Almost every style below is 100% cotton, so weight is the main choice. A polyester duffel and a recycled cotton-poly blend cover the briefs that pure cotton doesn't.
The shortlist
These styles cover a range of weights, fibers, and jobs.
- Q-Tees Economical Tote (QTB): 6 oz, 100% cotton. Best for high-count event giveaways. It's 6 oz, 100% cotton, so screen print, DTF, embroidery, and discharge all go down cleanly.
- BAGedge Canvas Promo Tote (BE007): 6 oz, 100% cotton canvas. Best for promo runs printed by screen or DTF.
- Liberty Bags Nicole Tote (8860): 6 oz, 100% cotton. Best for light DTF and screen work where color has to match across the run.
- Liberty Bags Natural Tote with Contrast-Color Handles (8868): 10 oz, 100% cotton. Best for screen print or embroidery on a natural body with colored handles.
- Comfort Colors Everyday Tote (CCET0): 10 oz, 100% cotton twill. Best for retail totes that get screen printed or embroidered.
- Q-Tees Promotional Tote (Q800): 12 oz, 100% cotton. Best for heavy promo totes with screen print or embroidery.
- OAD Midweight Recycled Gusseted Tote (OAD106R): 75% cotton / 25% polyester. Best for programs that call for recycled material, decorated with DTG, DTF, HTV, or screen print.
- OAD Economical Sport Pack (OAD101): 100% cotton drawstring. Best for screen-printed team and event packs.
- Independent Trading Co. 29L Day Tripper Duffel Bag: 10.5 oz, 100% polyester mesh construction. Best for sublimation, HTV, and embroidery.
- Augusta Sportswear Cinch Bag (1905): a drawstring cinch bag, made in China. Another drawstring option for team packs.
How heavy should the tote be?
Go 6 oz for full-color transfers at volume, and 10 or 12 oz when the tote needs more body. The 6 oz styles are the light, flat giveaway bag. DTF lays down cleanly on that light, flat face. It works on the 10 and 12 oz bags too.
Going heavier doesn't cost you anything on stitching. Embroidery and DTG both work on every cotton tote here. As a general rule, heavier cotton has a coarser face. So print a test on the 10 and 12 oz bags before you commit to fine detail.
For a retail tote, we'd pick the Comfort Colors Everyday Tote. It's 10 oz cotton twill, which takes screen print ink smoothly and has the body to hold embroidery. It's all cotton, so there's no second fiber in the weave taking up dye in its own way. That matters when you restock a line over time and need the new bags to match the old ones.
Cotton, blend, or polyester?
Use cotton for screen print, discharge, or DTF. Pick the blend when the brief says recycled, and the polyester duffel for sublimation. All the 100% cotton styles take screen print and discharge cleanly, since discharge needs all-cotton fabric to work. None are recommended for sublimation, because sublimation ink bonds only to polyester.
The OAD Midweight Recycled Gusseted Tote is 75% cotton and 25% polyester. Screen print, DTG, HTV, DTF, and embroidery all work on it. Skip discharge, because it needs all-cotton fabric. It's a cotton-poly blend, and the two fibers take dye differently, so color can shift from one order to the next. If the bags have to match, order the full run at once.
The Day Tripper Duffel is the one bag here built for poly methods. It's 100% polyester, so sublimation ink and HTV both bond to it, and the 10.5 oz body holds embroidery. DTF works too. Screen print takes more care on polyester. DTG and discharge both need cotton fiber, so use another method on this bag. Dark colors need the most care, because all that polyester carries dye that can move into a light print. Any polyester dye can bleed into light plastisol, so a low-cure ink or a blocker base helps if you screen print the dark colors.
Will the bags shrink?
Cotton of any kind can pull in after a hot dry. So if a tote will be washed, or the print has to fit a tight panel, wash and dry one sample and measure it before you size the artwork.
Do I need a drawstring instead?
For a school or team run where players carry gear on their backs, yes. A drawstring pack does that job and a tote can't. The OAD Economical Sport Pack is 100% cotton, so screen print and discharge both work well. A one-color team logo prints crisply on it. The Augusta Sportswear Cinch Bag is the other drawstring on the list.
Which bag fits your job?
- Event giveaway, high count: Q-Tees Economical Tote or BAGedge Canvas Promo Tote. Both are 6 oz cotton with a light, flat face that suits DTF and screen print.
- Retail line: Comfort Colors Everyday Tote, for 10 oz twill and steady color.
- Heavy promo or embroidered gift: Q-Tees Promotional Tote at 12 oz.
- Natural bag with a color accent: Liberty Bags Natural Tote with Contrast-Color Handles.
- Recycled-material program: OAD Midweight Recycled Gusseted Tote.
- Team packs: OAD Economical Sport Pack.
- Sublimation or vinyl: Independent Trading Co. 29L Day Tripper Duffel Bag.
What if I can only stock one tote?
Make it the Comfort Colors Everyday Tote. It's 100% cotton twill, so it takes screen print, embroidery, and discharge. With no polyester in the fabric, reorders are easier to match to the first run.
