Direct-to-film transfers carry their own adhesive, so they bond to cotton, polyester and blends alike. That opens up your choice of blank and shifts the question to how each fabric handles the heat press. The ten styles below cover cotton tees, cotton-poly blends, fleece and full polyester.
The shortlist
Each style covers a different fabric or job, so one order can mix several.
- Gildan 5000 Heavy Cotton T-Shirt: 5.3 oz, 100% U.S. cotton, classic fit, sizes S to 5XL. Best for everyday cotton tees.
- Tultex 235 Youth Fine Jersey T-Shirt: 4.5 oz, pre-shrunk 100% ringspun cotton, youth sizes XS to XL. Best for the kids' sizes on a school or team order.
- Comfort Colors 1717 Garment-Dyed Heavyweight T-Shirt: 6.1 oz, 100% ringspun cotton, relaxed fit, garment-dyed. Best for retail tees with a washed look.
- Colortone 1000 Multi-Color Tie-Dyed T-Shirt: 5.3 oz, pre-shrunk 100% cotton, classic fit. Best for tie-dye merch.
- Colortone 1390 Crystal Wash T-Shirt: 5.3 oz, pre-shrunk 100% cotton, classic fit. Best for a washed pattern under a bold logo.
- Next Level 6210 CVC Tee: 4.3 oz, 60/40 combed ringspun cotton/poly, regular fit, side-seamed, sizes XS to 6XL. Best for soft blend tees.
- Gildan 8000 DryBlend T-Shirt: 5.5 oz, 50/50 cotton/poly, classic fit. Best for blend tees on a budget.
- Gildan 18500 Heavy Blend Hooded Sweatshirt: 8 oz, 50/50 fleece, double-lined hood, pouch pocket, sizes XS to 5XL. Best for everyday hoodies.
- Gildan 42000 Performance T-Shirt: 5 oz, 100% polyester, moisture wicking, side-seamed. Best for athletic tees.
- Team 365 TT11 Men's Zone Performance T-Shirt: 3.5 oz polyester interlock, UPF 40+, sizes XS to 6XL. Best for light team jerseys.
Why does DTF work on so many fabrics?
A DTF transfer is pigment ink printed onto film, dusted with a hot-melt adhesive powder and cured. Under the press, that adhesive melts into the face of the shirt and grips it. The ink never has to soak in, the way DTG ink does on cotton. It never has to dye the fiber either, the way sublimation does on polyester.
So the same transfer goes onto a cotton tee, a 50/50 hoodie and a polyester jersey. If you're weighing transfers against dye, the sublimation guide covers when the fiber itself should carry the print.
Is DTF the right call for a mixed order?
This is where DTF pays off. Picture a school spirit order: Gildan 5000 tees for parents, Tultex 235 tees for kids, Gildan 18500 hoodies for staff, and Gildan 42000 performance tees for the team. Screen printing that means matching ink and cure to three fabrics. With DTF it's one gang sheet and one design across every fabric. Just drop to poly settings, or use a low-temp transfer, for the 42000s.
The decoration method compatibility basics guide shows where DTF fits next to each other method.
Does the fabric surface matter?
Yes. The adhesive grips best when it touches as much of the surface as it can, so a smooth, tight face holds edges cleaner. Gildan builds for this on its blends. It says the DryBlend 8000 uses high-twist yarns for a smoother printing surface. It also says the Heavy Blend 18500 has a finer face yarn for the same reason. The Next Level 6210 is combed ringspun, a process that strips out short fibers before spinning.
Fleece has more loft than jersey, so press firmly enough that the adhesive seats into the face. Seams, zippers and the hoodie pocket edge can lift the platen, so a pressing pillow helps keep pressure even.
How hot should you press each fabric?
Start with your transfer maker's settings, then adjust by fiber. Cotton takes standard DTF temperatures. Polyester and poly blends do better at the low end of the range, or with a low-temperature transfer. Dyed polyester can release some dye under heat, and on bright or dark poly colors that dye can tint a white transfer. A cooler press or a transfer with a blocker layer keeps whites clean. Decorating on polyester goes deeper on poly settings.
Read the blend by color, too. Gildan lists the 5000's heathers, neons, safety colors and a few others as 50/50 cotton/poly, so press those like the 8000. On the 8000, three heathers are 65/35 polyester/cotton. On the 18500, five dark heathers are 60/40 polyester/cotton.
The Colortone tie-dye and crystal wash tees are 100% cotton, so heat is simple. The pattern is the design question instead. Bold art with a strong outline reads better over a swirl than fine detail.
Will it shrink after pressing?
Cotton that isn't pre-shrunk can move in the first wash. Comfort Colors says garment dyeing keeps the 1717's shrinkage minimal. Either way, wash and dry one sample and measure it before you lock sizes. When the fit can't drift, the Tultex 235 and both Colortone tees are pre-shrunk.
Which blank should I start with?
For everyday DTF, we'd start with the Gildan 5000. Most colors are 100% U.S. cotton, so you press at standard cotton settings. The heathers, neons and safety colors are 50/50, so press those like the 8000. It runs S to 5XL in a long list of colors, and Gildan says the Heavy Cotton line was reworked for better printability. Then match the job:
- Youth sizes: Tultex 235
- Washed retail look: Comfort Colors 1717
- Tie-dye or crystal wash: Colortone 1000 or 1390
- Soft blend: Next Level 6210
- Budget blend: Gildan 8000
- Hoodies: Gildan 18500
- Athletic and team wear: Gildan 42000 or Team 365 TT11
Running vinyl names on the same order? The HTV vinyl blanks guide covers press settings for cut vinyl.
